SPENNY takes fans to new realms in the musicverse with Event Horizon, a fresh 3-track debut EP. This release showcases SPENNY’s indomitable artistry and reactivates his emerging self-made project.

Growing up in Colorado, SPENNY started his music project almost six years ago and has since sonically evolved, reaching massive heights. He’s played major venues in the state, including Mishawaka Amphitheater and the forever missed Sonic Bloom Festival in its final year, 2023.

Marking a significant milestone in his career, the Black Box in Denver is hosting the SPENNY Event Horizon release party on October 16th. Renowned for its considerable influence on bass music and sound culture worldwide, it is beyond inspiring to see SPENNY headline the Black Box. Joining him will be up-and-coming producers Sokota and Yewz.

Travel to New Realms and Horizons in The New EP

Featuring a collaboration with Sokota, Event Horizon kicks off with a bang in “Pillars of Creation.” The heavy basslines and deep frequencies evoke thrilling sensations as these producers mesh their sound designs and styles seamlessly.

The two solo tracks, “Ascension” and “Singularity,” are each a whirlwind of individualistic experimental bass with a hip-hop influence. SPENNY has truly developed an extraordinary sound with an innovative approach to dubstep as we know it.

Pre-save Event Horizon!

I had the opportunity to speak with SPENNY for an exclusive insight into the creative process behind Event Horizon. We also chatted about his upbringing and the exciting future endeavors he has ahead. Pre-save the EP above.

Liz Seitzinger, Electric Hawk: What can you tell us about the inspiration and creative process behind your new EP?

SPENNY: The biggest inspiration behind the Event Horizon EP was themes of deep space and how much is still unknown. Particularly pertaining to black holes and the extent of their mystery. I love to read and nerd out about that stuff. The meaning of the title ‘Event Horizon’ is the boundary that marks a black hole’s limits. It’s not so much a literal physical boundary, but a mathematical boundary that defines the point where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. This is where the laws of time and space as we know them start to break down. It feels fitting for my journey and current state as an artist right now.

I’m hoping this EP is boundary pushing in a sense and plays a role in moving the genre forward, as well as marks a point of “no return” in a way for me as an artist. I’m fully committing to and going all in on the vision and sound I have worked hard to curate for this project. The track titles, being “Pillars of Creation,” “Ascension,” and finally ending at “Singularity,” which is the scientific term for the center of a black hole, all carry those similar themes. I hope the EP evokes a sense of journey through the musical storytelling I’ve woven throughout the tracks.

LS: How has this debut EP shaped the future of the SPENNY Project?

SPENNY: I feel like this project is the truest form of self-expression I’ve been able to tap into as an artist. From start to end, it just truly feels like me, and that’s what I’m most proud of. I hope it showcases my range as a producer and ability to tap into different genres and energies while still carrying a more profound meaning than just making “club music” or “bangers,” which I feel a lot of the industry can get caught up in sometimes.

LS: You’ve been gaining traction and playing festivals across the states this year. This includes Badger Bass Camp, The Underground Ranch Campout, and Force Fields. What does this headline at the Black Box mean for your career? What can we expect from your set?

SPENNY: Yeah, I feel super grateful to have had the opportunity to share my art with some really special communities and people all across the country this summer. It’s definitely been a wild past few months that I’ll carry with me for a long time. Looking forward to this Black Box headline is something that has been a massive goal of mine since the inception of the Spenny project almost 6 years ago. Growing up and seeing so many of my favorite and most influential artists play the same venue, getting the opportunity to curate my own headline event one day in such a legendary space seemed so far away and improbable. I will definitely be looking to put my best foot forward and really showcase all the new music I’ve been working on, including the new EP, and as always, play a diverse set that hits all the right spots.

To anyone and everyone who’s going to be in or around the Denver area on October 16th, I would love to see you there. I’ll be playing an hour and a half extended set, joined by some special guests to close out the night. Opening sets from Sokota and Yewz, which I’m stoked for. Both of them are incredibly talented, and as I mentioned, Sokota and I have collaborated on several projects. This will also mark Yewz’s Denver debut. I feel he is long overdue, as he’s been crushing it for so long. Lastly, we’ll be bringing in some very unique production that I don’t believe has been done at the Black Box before, with a 360-degree stage and laser curation by the legend Laser Monkey.

LS: How has building your sound and establishing your name in the scene been impacted by growing up in Denver?

SPENNY: Denver means so much to me. From the people, to the culture, to the diverse and ever-thriving music scene, it’s something that not only profoundly shaped me as an artist but as an individual. I feel so fortunate to have grown up in a space that celebrates artists of all kinds and provides us with a great platform to share our art. This show at The Black Box will certainly be a full-circle moment for me. I’ll be pouring everything I have into this set.

LS: What would be one piece of advice you would give your past self?

SPENNY: Man, that’s such a tough question because there’s a million things I wish I knew then, but the biggest one would have to be just to trust myself. Trust my vision and trust that keeping the art the main thing will always do more than getting caught up in any of the day-to-day struggles that come with the territory of being an artist. Eventually, I figured that out for myself, but I wish I had trusted and believed in myself sooner. I believe that comes from surrounding yourself with the right people who will push you to be the best version of yourself. I would love to give my younger self the reassurance that those people will and do come into your life if you keep coming from a good place with pure intentions.

LS: Any other exciting news or upcoming shows you can tell us about?

SPENNY: Other than the EP and Black Box Headline, I’m beyond thrilled to have just announced my first bus tour. I’ll be supporting INZO on his upcoming Mirrorverse Tour. We’ll be hitting a ton of cities, and I’m super excited for the experience. I think it’s going to be very, very special, so if you’re not in Denver and can’t make it to my Black Box show, I hope to see you in your city on tour this winter/spring! I won’t be back in Denver for some time following this upcoming show, but I can say when I do come back, it’s going to be super special and a huge milestone for me as an artist. Looking forward to sharing that news with you all very soon. Until then, I love you all and thank you for being here

LS: It was a privilege to speak with such a sincere and passionate artist who offers a unique perspective and approach to his contributions in the ever-evolving world of music. We can’t wait to watch SPENNY thrive and continue to make breakthrough achievements.
