Dancefloors are no match for Villain Era’s new EP, Punchcut. Cheeky and provocative, this EP is effortlessly cool. The Philadelphia trio, comprised of Tygris, Wessanders, and Charles Nimbus, are showing the U.S. how breakbeat is done. The Villain Era origin story dates back to 2023, starting with an all-original mix. While each of the members has their own unique style, they Frankenstein their sounds into a high-energy club-ready machine.

Seductively Menacing Rebel Shit
The title track, “Punchcut,” introduces listeners to a nefarious theme that rings true throughout the entire album. It’s a seductively menacing tune that will lead you places you’ve never been. The song’s punchy attitude has the edginess of a switchblade. Engines are revved up, and systems are a go on “El Camino Cool”. It’s the soundtrack to pulling off a heist. It’s what you’re bumping out of the speakers during a speedy getaway. It swerves past the ordinary into a realm of stylish debauchery and the results are well worth it.
The next track, “The Undertaker” builds on the endeavor. The blend of garage and breakbeat flavors encompasses a mischievous energy. The drums are hypnotic, and the bass is deep and dangerous. There’s a midnight bell that’s tolling and a crow that’s cawing. These omens and beats signify a night that’s ready to unfold, and you’d better prepare for whatever is coming. In the club, it’s unlikely you can stay anything but still. Ending it out, “Signal” is a saucy concoction of sounds. It’s a fierce experiment that serves and delivers. Who else is going to make a tiger growl sound this sexy? It’s on some rebel shit.
Overall, Punchcut restores faith in the underground. It pays homage to an old-school underground era but with a future sound. The vision is abundantly clear. Villain Era manages to build a world of their own through their sound. Many try and few succeed but they make it look easy.
