At the beginning of the year, Electric Hawk met with Shlump to discuss his newest collab. Since then, there have been countless shows, festivals, and releases! For that reason, we decided to reconnect.
Shlump has remained a household name in the electronic music scene for a long time. Not to mention, he’s about to finish his second headlining tour. The diversity in song selection and boisterous stage presence are just a couple of characteristics of his that we all love to witness. Due to his busy summer schedule, we’re grateful to have had a chance to catch up.
Let’s dive into this Exclusive Interview with our boy, Shlump!
Morganne Davis, Electric Hawk: Hey, hey! You’ve been on the road for the Alien Trip Tour. What are your tips and tricks for staying healthy while frequently playing shows?
Shlump: I try the best I can! I try to eat healthy and get some good sleep. The tour is pretty mellow for the most part! Most stops were Friday and Saturday shows, so I could go home and regroup. I also have a good skill of being able to sleep wherever. For the most part, I never felt that drained out during the last tour. Two more weekends after this!
MD: What were your favorite moments while being on tour?
S: It’s really fun getting to tour with your friends; that’s probably one of the best parts of doing tours. There was a run where we were on the road for two weeks. And that was fun because I was with Shanghai Doom, my VJ, Kobra, and my photographer, all there as a crew. That was definitely the highlight of the tour. We had probably six or seven shows in two weeks, and we all just traveled together and hung out!
MD: Nice! That goes into my next question: how did you pick the amazing supporting artists, like Common Creation, Jason Leech, Mythm, etc.?

S: I compiled a list of artists I like and would like to tour with. It’s a process of seeing who’s available. And it’s more than just that I like their music; I want to feel like there’s some chemistry beyond that, too, ya know? You’re going to be spending time with them on the road, so it’s good to be with people you click with. It was a no-brainer with the Shanghai Doom boys; I clicked with them really well. The lucky thing is there are a lot of cool people in the scene that I enjoy spending time with and also enjoy their music. Everyone I toured with on the last one was really cool!
Now that his tour is coming to a close, we’re eager to hear what’s on the horizon for the Shlump project.
MD: Sooo, I hear you’re working on a new album… is that true?!
S: Slowly! I was hoping to have more done by now than it is. [Laughs] But it’s okay! I think creating artwork that you’re stoked about can sometimes be difficult. I feel like I’m so critical of the music I make. I’ll think, “Oh, this sucks,” and my homie will say, “Dude, it’s pretty good!” It’s definitely in the early stages of writing a lot of ideas and boiling them down.
MD: Will this album be different or similar to your wonky, psychedelic sound?
S: Right now, it’s all over the place; I definitely write in a pretty broad spectrum. But it’s all heavy bass music. Some of it’s more dubstep-ish, and some more drum and bass. It’s going in a lot of different directions, but like I said, I’m more focused on getting ideas out. There isn’t much of a concept or story yet. I’m trying to keep it open, not have anything forcing the creativity in this direction or that direction. I want to let it express itself as ideas happen.
However, we have quite a bit of finished music that’s going to come out over the next year as singles! We have an EP and a bunch of things lined up to keep the ball rolling. Even another tour to plan…
Maybe you’ve heard some of Shlump’s unreleased tunes, whether at a stop on the Alien Trip tour or the many festival appearances he’s had this year.
MD: On top of being on tour for the first half of the year, you also attended quite a few festivals! What’s been your most memorable festival experience so far?
S: Um, Wakaan has got to be up there. I’ve played it a few times! A lot of these festivals, I’m in and out, but it’s cool when you get to hang out and enjoy yourself. Shambhala is probably one of my favorites I’ve played over the years. Shambhala is cool and definitely a good time. There are a lot of really great ones, like Bonnaroo, as well.

MD: If you have one, what is your dream festival to play at?
S: I really want to play Electric Forest. That’s one of the big ones that looks awesome. Also, EDC, obviously. I want to check out festivals in other countries, too, like Boomtown in the UK! It seems like it’d be right up my alley.
MD: In addition to being very good at producing music, what other hobbies do you have? I know you enjoy skateboarding!
S: Skateboarding is definitely like the OG passion of my life. I still skate all the time; it’s kind of crazy. I’ve been doing that since I was eight or nine. It brings me back to my childhood. I have a couple of homies who are still down to ride! Keepin’ the dream alive.
I’m a pretty mellow dude. When I’m home, I’m not a crazy party animal or anything. I’m introverted, for the most part. I feel like a lot of creative people are that way, too. It’s a funny contrast to have where your job is to be extroverted. But I do like to skate. I have two cats; I’m a cat dad. It’s pretty chill, honestly!
Lastly, a huge shoutout to Shlump for taking the time to talk with us at Beyond Existence! Electric Hawk has always been a big fan of his project, and if you aren’t, you should be now!
