Morganne Davis, Electric Hawk: What’s your origin story? How did the Rowhm project begin?

Rowhm: The project began in 2018 after attending The Untz Festival – shout out to The Untz, for real!

“I discovered Nero in 2012 as a freshman in high school and have been a fan of electronic music since. I’d attended other shows and festivals like Spring Awakening, Lollapalooza, etc. but The Untz connected me with music more than any other show or festival ever had before.”

R: I was so inspired by my experience there that I knew on the drive home that I wanted to learn how to write music and DJ. I bought a DJ controller when I got home and learned how to DJ. Then, two years later in 2020, I bought Ableton and began to learn music production.

MD: Would you classify your project as a certain genre, or is it a mixture of a few?

R: It’s primarily a mixture of two genres: drum & bass and dubstep. That’s not to say I’ll never experiment in other spaces, but those are the main sounds behind the Rowhm project.

MD: What’s your favorite genre to produce?

R: Right now, it’s soulful/liquid drum & bass. I’m grateful to have been able to travel to London in January of this year, and that’s pretty much all I’ve been writing since getting back!

MD: Since you’re originally from Chicago, what are a few of your favorite aspects of the city?

R: There’s so much I love about Chicago! I’m a Chicago homer through and through [laughs]. One of my favorite things is the deep history of the city. I love that I can grab my skateboard, skate through the city, and find so much inspiration around me. Chicago architecture is some of my favorite in the world and it’s really cool to see firsthand if you never have before.

When it comes to energetic music scenes, the Chicago area stands out as a top destination. For example, the NSW Presents team excels in fostering a welcoming community and organizing unforgettable lineups. Marking their eighth event, Solar Tide will be a memorable weekend.

MD: So, how many Lunar/Solar Tide events have you been to, whether as an attendee or an artist? And who are you most excited to see this year?

R: I attended my first Lunar Tide in 2022, and this will be my first Solar Tide! Both nights are curated so well from start to finish. Shout out to all the teams involved for bringing this lineup together! I’m personally most excited for Halogenix. His music is a huge inspiration for me and it’ll be my first time getting the chance to see him live. If I’m not mistaken, it’s his Chicago debut too, which makes it much more special!

In just a couple of short weeks, festival season in the city will be underway! This two-day extravangza includes quite a few notable names, such as Distinct Motive, Caspa, and Sicaria. Plus, the dynamic duo Vide and Inspect3r take the stage for a Nic Baker set that will undoubtedly have the crowd groovin’. Kicking things off with mesmerizing drum & bass melodies, Halogenix will deliver a soul-stirring performance that will leave us all spellbound. This will be his Chicago debut, similiar to Torcha. From heart-pounding beats to soulful rhythms, Solar Tide’s lineup is a testament to the rich diversity and boundless creativity within the electronic music scene. With performers representing a tapestry of musical styles, this festival is poised to be a celebration of unity through the universal language of music.

MD: I have to ask! Do you have anything special planned for your upcoming set at Solar?

R: I have a few things in the works! I don’t want to spoil too much though. I will say that I’ll be playing a ton of new music from myself and I’m stoked to share it!

MD: It’s also my first Rowhm set, I’m stoked too! Lastly, do you have any advice for other up-and-coming artists?

R: My advice is just don’t stop. If you’re passionate about writing music or DJing, keep going and don’t stop. I struggle pretty frequently with imposter syndrome and self-doubt, and you really have to push past those moments. If you’re here because you’re passionate about this, then you’ll be so fulfilled if you keep going. Stay consistent, support your local scene, and the opportunities will come.

“Thank you so much to Morganne and Electric Hawk for this opportunity! I can’t wait to see ya’ll at Solar Tide on Friday, May 10th. Let’s dance!”

Huge thanks to Rowhm for chatting with us; can’t wait to be reunited on the dancefloor soon! By the way, lock in those last-minute tickets here! Until then…
