Our heartfelt thoughts go out to the families and friends of Josilyn Ruiz and Brandy Escamilla as well as the survivors of the Beyond Wonderland shooting.
After taking some time to process what happened at Beyond Wonderland 2023, I have some things I would like to say to our community. My hope in writing this is that we can start to heal as a collective and that those who need mental health resources have access to them.
What began as an adventure with my friends in a place I love dearly turned into a horrific nightmare–and quick. Originally, I had expected to write a review of my time spent there with the usual buzz felt coming home from The Gorge. I might have decided to write about how the beautiful double rainbow on Friday shone over us as the sun set. Maybe I would have written about the incredible performers or intricately detailed art installations.
Instead, I am coming to you with a love letter.
The EDM community has consistently shown me an immense and unwavering amount of love and support. Like many of you, it has carried me through the ebbs and flows of everyday life. Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect have been the building blocks for our musical little world. A world where all are welcome and accepted with open arms.
I believe that as a community we can continue to uplift each other through highs and lows.
A Lovely Escape
EDM shows and festivals have been a safe space for us to dance, have fun, and be around wonderful, kind people. When I went to my first EDM show at 15 years old, I instantly felt welcomed and respected. I felt like I belonged somewhere–like no matter what life threw at me, I still had a place that brought me happiness. That feeling has stayed with me since then.
Since joining the Electric Hawk team this year, I have never felt more loved and supported. This online community has introduced me to so many incredible writers, musicians, artists, and new friends. I have found so much amazing music and have enjoyed every second spent writing to you. Thank you for being a part of this <3
Raves have given me freedom and an escape that, until recently, felt unsullied by negativity and violence. I don’t know if or when I will feel safe going to another large festival like Beyond Wonderland, but I am sure that when I do, I will be met with PLUR once again. I know in my heart that some things will never change.
