From the underground basements of Boulder to the towering stage of Mission Ballroom, Maddy O’Neal and her ascent have felt both hard-earned and inevitable. On February 28, she steps into one of the most defining moments of her career, co-headlining alongside the legendary TOKiMONSTA for a night that symbolizes years of grit, growth, and unwavering community support. For Colorado locals who have witnessed her evolution from intimate DIY spaces to commanding major stages, this show is more than a milestone โ€” itโ€™s a full-circle celebration.

We sat down with Maddy Oโ€™Neal to reflect on those early days, unpack what this landmark night means, and explore what comes after the lights go down on one of the most pivotal evenings of her journey.

seradopa: Youโ€™ve played some of the smallest rooms in Colorado over the years โ€” DIY spaces, opening slots, late-night sets. When you think back to those early shows, what stands out most to you now?

Maddy O’Neal: Honestly, being a part of the earlier years of the Colorado scene feels so special to look back on. I learned what truly supporting your friends and community was all about on a very grassroots levelโ€ฆ it was the beginning of a lifelong family that helped push the culture along collectivelyโ€ฆ even from the tiny 20-person shows in Boulder basements and hustling tickets to my first โ€œraw artists showcaseโ€ to countless Cervantes shows and beyond. We all did it together.

seradopa: Colorado has watched you grow from local support slots to now headlining one of Denverโ€™s most celebrated venues. How does it feel to achieve this milestone in Denver?

Maddy O’Neal: It feels pretty wild. These moments are always the biggest cathartic releases for me. It forces me to stop and reflect on the journey in a real, tangible way. Making a career out of my art (with my friends and fans collectively on the journey with me) is truly the coolest thing in the world.

Tour life can move extremely quickly, but the tradition of returning to Denver for โ€œthe big momentโ€ every year is the greatest reminder to be grateful, to be proud, and deliver the best night you can for the people who literally raised you. Itโ€™s emotional as hell in the best way possible.

seradopa: Youโ€™re co-headlining this night with TOKiMONSTA. How did that pairing come together, and what makes her the right collaborator for this moment?

Maddy O’Neal: Ya know, this coheadline took a lot of careful thought and went through a lot of different phases in terms of curation. At the end of the day, wanted to do something differentโ€ฆ something that may catch people off gaurd or merge worlds in a way that will pleasantly surprise people.

The night from start to finish is kind of a journey through different subgenres in a pretty rad way. Between myself, Toki , Mary Droppinz, Neumonic, and Smores, weโ€™ve got bass, house, experimental beats, UKG, electro soul vibes, etc.

You are going to get a taste of it all. TOKiMONSTA was also one of the first and only female producers I looked up to when I first started making music all those years ago, so itโ€™s a pretty special full-circle moment for me.

seradopa: Without giving too much away, how is this set going to differ from past Maddy Oโ€™Neal shows?

Maddy O’Neal: Iโ€™ve been working tirelessly behind the scenes to finish new music, edits, etc., and I couldnโ€™t be more proud of how it all turned out. The runway to this show kind of shot me into a creative overdrive where I wrote an entire EP and workshopped my whole catalogue in a way that feels fresh. Iโ€™m very excited to showcase what Iโ€™ve been working on.

seradopa: Beyond the career milestone, what does this moment mean to you as a person?

Maddy O’Neal: Writing music and performing/connecting through the act of Harding, it has been a major vehicle for personal growth for me. A lot of it is subconscious, but I’m moving through different eras and letting go for growth.

This moment proves to me that if you truly believe in yourself and your vision, anything is possible with the right work ethic and mentality. Iโ€™ve made most of my best friends who are family for life through this journey in the music industry, and grown massively on a personal level through all the ups and downs that came with it. This space has given me the COURAGE to express myself freely and take risks in hopes I have inspired others along the way. That is something I will never take for granted.

seradopa: For fans whoโ€™ve seen you in more intimate venues over the years, whatโ€™s going to feel biggest or most elevated about this production?

Maddy O’Neal: Playing such a legendary room like this allows you to fully curate a vibe from every angle, from an audio and visual level. This room was designed to feel immersive and intimate, although itโ€™s in a large setting. I plan to fully take advantage of that. We merged organic elements with digital and wanted the place to feel warm and inviting to the audience.

seradopa: Five years from now, when you look back at February 28th, what do you hope it represents in the arc of your career?

Maddy O’Neal: I hope I look back proudly as another milestone in the pursuit of art and community. Each goal ticked off the list is proof that you are capable of so much more than you think if you truly believe it. Elevate your mentality and look at the world full of possibilitiesโ€ฆI hope this show is a massive reminder of that state of mind. I know the smile and inspiration from the night will become part of me.
