If you’ve yet to bear witness to the chaotic enigma that is Joseph Roberts, better known as Detox Unit, you’re in for a treat. More than that, he serves Michelin star audible edibles. Known for operating at the intersection of experimental bass music, rave futurism and sound system culture, Detox Unit curates a precise blend of music incorporating breakbeat, hip-hop and nostalgic rave mechanics. Schematic, a four-track EP, is his first official release in nearly three years.
His released catalog has slowly continued to expand since The Abyss EP in 2016. For fans, it’s nothing short of exciting to follow along with Detox Unit’s evolution over the years. With releases few and far between, supporters hang on to every bit of audio they can get their hands on. There is an art to the curation that is undoubtedly emulated through his original compositions.

The release of Schematic marks a new era for one of underground and experimental bass music’s most sought-after and respected artists. Named after the concept of a blueprint that reduces a system to only its essential components, Schematic embraces that same philosophy. He prioritizes craftsmanship, intentionalism, and longevity. Unreleased work undergoes continuous phases of improvement. Each tweak is meticulously tested throughout live performances. This also applies to released songs. For example, the “Flatline” heard on Liminal is nothing like the track performed today.
Every set is a variance in production, and it has paid off. Schematic has been a work in progress for many years, and Detox Unit has an intolerance for the substandard. Each track is deliberately designed with a balance of refinement and high dancefloor energy.
Set It Off Like a Detonator
The Schematic EP plays like audio you would discover upon entering a new millennium. The cover art has a crisp, futuristic, Y3K aesthetic. It kicks off with “Low Visibility” which has an airy, atmospheric tenor. Given the clearly identifiable sonic ambience, you are immediately transported into his world.
And just like that, it’s a quick step directly into the explosive lead single “Detonator.” The entire track is a flex from the lyrics to the production level. The delivery is braggadocious but warranted. Fading into the next track, “Big Mood” expands the euphoric flavors of the EP. Listeners head nod their way through this masterfully produced soundscape.
Closing with an unmistakably Detox Unit track, “Equidistant” ends the EP. It’s a song that’s been in the making for a long time. Finally hearing the proper version after years of testing through live performances feels like winning a prize. It reminds you to put in the work every. Single. Day. Detox Unit exemplifies “don’t talk about it, be about it” consistently.
Continuing a long-standing tradition for his fanbase, Detox Unit has also released a Bandcamp and SoundCloud exclusive bonus track, the sought-after remix of Ludacris’ “The Potion.” It is available only through these platforms for listeners who have supported him throughout his career.
Every Single Day
The release arrives during one of Detox Unit’s busiest touring years to date. From surprise appearances at Electric Forest—including a packed Good Life Stage performance and a first-ever back-to-back set with Thought Process at Grand Artique—and a headline performance at Sound Haven. Next up are performances at the inaugural Nocturnal Valley, a return to Secret Dreams, appearances alongside Of The Trees at Camp Alderwild including a special back-to-back with Koan Sound, and additional festival dates throughout the remainder of 2026.
In promotion of the release, River Beats hosted a Schematic EP release party from a rooftop in Denver last weekend. It featured special guests kLL sMTH, Frequent and Esoteric all playing on Funktion-One sound. Attendees were able to experience Schematic live and even witness an iconic back-to-back-to-back-to-back with all four artists. Additionally, a Schematic visualizer premiered on the Detox Unit YouTube channel last night. Visuals were created in collaboration by Glass Crane and Arkitekt. Each track has its own stunning visuals, making them just as essential to the experience as the music itself.
With Schematic, Detox Unit continues to define his own path. It’s one that he’s defined without letting the pressure of pace from today’s economy disrupt him. Meticulous precision, artistic integrity, and an unwillingness to settle for anything less than the best have been core pillars in his ideology. This is a spirit that will continue to shape a new generation of underground party music, combining elements of old-school DJing and hip-hop with experimental sounds of tomorrow.
