Sam Andrus, better known by his producer alias, 5AM, best describes his sound as “music for ears that are awake”. Calling upon all your senses, 5AM blends jazz-fusion melodies and glitchy beat breaks over deep basslines that will have you transcended into his airy abyss. For his latest work, 5AM teams up with rising bass artist TYGRIS and the super talented percussionist, Zone Drums. Together, the group forms the 5AM Trio, which focuses more on jamming and the improvisational aspect of the music. Welcome to the Triovision EP, the debut project from the 5AM Trio.
The first track is appropriately titled “Vibe”. The track builds up with a lush, melodic intro that will fool you into thinking this is a light, downtempo tune. Don’t be tricked, the song immediately blasts off into heavy, uptempo masterpiece with nu skool beat breaks. As if this wasn’t enough, the song shifts into a funkadelic, jazzy jam sess where the trio shines in what sounds like an improvised medley.
“Calibrate” the second song on the EP is a groovy track that links up with future funk pioneer, Wax Future. The jamtronica track is built upon pure instrumentation as it unravels the sounds of the drums and guitars into a chaotic, glitch-hop heater. Zone Drums shines on this track as it showcases his wicked skills on the drums. Eventually, the track makes way for Wax Future to lay down a stellar guitar solo. Overall, the scratching on this tune is pure insanity. Tipper fans will be salivating at the mouth when this hear this one.
To close out the EP, the trio slows things down and connects with Maya Elise on “Floating”. A track that will cause your mind to slowly drift away. The song blends silky guitar riffs and Maya’s calming vocals into a futuristic bass track that will surely have you feeling good.
Stream the EP below and be sure to check out each individual artists’ own material as well. Expect big things from this collective in 2020. 5 AM will be playing his first-ever Electric Forest in June. Maybe he’ll bring the trio along for a special set 😉
