Take yourself on a journey through the manipulation of sound and set foot in theMoving Shadows EP by Mindex. Immersing yourself in the dissipation of ideals concerning the rules and regulations of music, travel through the master producer’s mind to a previously unexplored realm of musicality.
Often slotted into the intelligent dance music category, Mindex is in a league of his own. Producing since the early 2000s, Mindex, also known as Slava, has earned the respect of the highest-ranking experimental producers. This includes numerous nods from Tipper and Ott, hall of fame artists within the scene. Recently, Slava has released his newest body of work, a four-track EP titled Moving Shadows.
Moving Shadows
Throughout Mindex‘s EP, the artist weaves an intricate web of styles, utilizing bass, breakbeats, signature hip-hop sounds, groovy jazz elements, and Middle Eastern influences. With each track, Mindex transports us back in time while simultaneously luring us into the future of experimental bass music. Moving Shadows transcends the borders of music, dipping into a most enjoyable playfulness that can only be described as flirty. The originality and combination of sounds and styles are particularly freeing, and are almost tongue-in-cheek during the EP’s third track, “Black Sun,“ in which we see an incredibly clean shift between genres both in and outside of bass music.
Diving Deeper Into the Shadows
Moving Shadows is playful; each choice Mindex makes is extremely calculated, and simutaneously free-flowing.
Immediately following “Black Sun,“ we dive into the title track, “Moving Shadows,“ the final track of the EP. Featuring Middle Eastern string instruments paired with underlying modulated and manipulated bass, it is deceivingly calm. Overall, the track serves to bring us back full circle to the relaxed feeling we find in “The Signal.“ An introduction to the world of Mindex, this track displays what is to come throughout the listening experience. Setting a precedent for the EP, “The Signal” allows the lines to be further blurred by Mindex’s innate ability to comprehend the dynamics of music. However, the Moving Shadows EP is a thing of superposition, and is neither one preconceived notion nor the other.
