Fresh from the success of monumental releases “Shake Junt” and “Wallace”, experimental music’s very own “Mellow Man,” Distinct Motive, has just released his much-awaited Dubs EP, a wonderfully whimsical and fantastically cheeky body of work. This marks Distinct’s first EP release with Zeds Dead’s iconic Deadbeats label and his seventh EP release overall.
The Canadian-born artist is a dub virtuoso, as well as a man of the people. Distinct Motive has a long-standing history of curating releases that both entertain and advance dubstep and experimental music. He is an artist that members of the community look up to. If you’ve ever had the opportunity to attend one of his performances, witnessing the general acknowledgment and appreciation from artists and fans alike is truly remarkable.
Distinct Motive’s body of work is a masterclass on the art of distortion and pacing in sound design and production, and ‘Dubs’ only solidifies this.
The entirety of Distinct Motive’s project aims to continue pushing the influential sounds that created and cultivated what is now considered the new-age 140 or deep-dub genre. However, Distinct still manages to showcase his signature sounds consistently throughout each of his pieces. All the while managing to surprise listeners in a way that is not only ear-catching but enthralling.
Diving Into ‘Dubs‘
The Dubs EP begins with “Cells“, a calm yet enticing track. From this, Distinct takes you through a hypnotizing journey from start to finish, featuring both euphonious and upbeat tracks, showcasing his diversity within the genre.
The central portion of the work is melodious, albeit foreboding, solidifying the continuation of the EP and taking you through a journey of his ability to command and understand music. This portion of Dubs picks up with two versions of the mid-laying track, “WATCHIN YOU”, with the first featuring ILLAMAN, a UK-based vocalist and MC. With his eccentric style, ILLAMAN adds some serious additional heat to the already upbeat and wonky track.

Immediately following this, we dive into a second vocally stripped version of “WATCHIN YOU”, in which we gain an insight into the layers of production that Distinct incorporates into each piece of work. This variation in stylistic choice only further solidifies the notion that elemental designs can drastically change a portion of a full body of work without diminishing its quality, but rather shedding new light.
The standout (and final) track, “NO MYSTERY,” is delightfully sinister, featuring samples and a sound that is well in tune with the overall mischievous ambiance of Distinct’s project, but also successfully serves the end of the EP in an extremely methodical manner. The entirety of Dubs delightfully showcases the best parts of the Distinct Motive project; and is both a work of art and a testament to the perpetuation of dubstep in its most signature form.
