Soulacybin made a name for himself in the bass scene by carving out his own distinct sound. For nearly a decade, he has distilled his unique blend of dub, drum and bass, funk, and trap. His live sets often range from psychedelic bangers and lively glitch-hop to 140 and midtempo grooves. Through his distillation of dub, Soulacybin has mastered weaving diverse genres together and brewed a new dynamic EP, Bug Eyes.
“The ‘Bug Eyes’ EP channels my energetic and intricate sound into a more polished and focused form. Heavy and gritty, vibrant and funky, this EP showcases adventurous compositions rich with glitchy textures and skillfully crafted bass.”
– Soulacybin
Bug Eyes opens energetically with its title track. A short wind-up with attention-grabbing low synths immediately grabs the listener’s attention before quickly dropping into bouncy layered beats. About halfway through the song, an even more massive mosaic of textured bass and glitchy sound design is unleashed. “Bug Eyes” is the perfect introduction to the EP, as it showcases Soulacybin’s skill of layering complex sounds together in a jaunty jam that is nearly impossible not to bounce to.
The second song, “Full Up,” keeps the energy high with punchy opening notes. One can easily feel the energy continue to build as the song summons gritty bass to the mix. A rising beat accompanies an array of heavier sounds that seamlessly dance together. It is effortless to find oneself dancing along with the rhythm and constant switch-ups as if personally invited by the tune itself.
Bug Eyes boasts top-tier production and intricate sound design.
Soulacybin is relentless with his composition of the third and final song, “Boomslang.” This song slows things down ever-so-slightly without losing any momentum. Calm opening vocals pair with vibrant and fresh bass to lead the listener to the apex of the track. “Boomslang” feels like a breath of fresh air on the dance floor. As the song is nearly over, he drops it back into complexity with a light and beautifully crafted switch-up once more before fading the song back into the opening vocals. This is an exceptionally clever closer to the EP.
Released with Gravitas, Soulacybin’s Bug Eyes EP is a high-energy display of his refined signature style. This release is sure to catch the ears of any sound design enthusiast and hook bass fans looking for something new and fresh. All three songs are immensely interesting in their own unique ways and are sure to get the dance floor moving! Soulacybin showcases first-class gritty bass paired with vibrant melodies that make for a masterful EP.
