Few artists in the dubstep world are rising as rapidly and relentlessly as Montreal’s own Wraz. With a reputation for infectious performance energy and an incomparable innovative vision, Wraz has already carved out a place among the genre’s most exciting and gifted producers.
Now, with the release of his groundbreaking 13-track LP, Rites, on Deep, Dark & Dangerous, he’s poised to make an even bigger impact on the scene.
Deep, Dark & Dangerous Just Got Wrazzled
Wraz is a force to be reckoned with. As a multi-talented sound engineer, he effortlessly bends genres, crafts immersive soundscapes, and brings a unique approach to every project he touches. The Deep, Dark & Dangerous label is proud to have played a role in his career so far, as he reaches new heights with his phenomenal new LP, Rites.
A tour de force of sonic wizardry, the album seamlessly weaves in breathtaking interludes that offer both tension and beauty as stark contrasts to the relentless bass. Wraz’s mastery of his craft is evident throughout each minute. Each track brings its own distinct flavor, yet together they create a remarkable whole.
Rites is a bold statement: a genre-blurring odyssey that fuses raw dubstep, thundering trap, industrial grit, and cinematic interludes, all stitched together with Wraz’s signature flair. With collaborations from label bossman Truth and production maestro Hypho, the album not only showcases technical mastery but also takes listeners on a suspenseful and cohesive ride from start to finish.
As the first DDD vinyl release of 2026, Rites represents a landmark moment for himself, the label, and the dubstep scene. We sat down with Wraz to dig into the creative vision behind the project, his approach to collaboration, and what it means to make a statement with one’s own craft in the ever-evolving world of bass music.
Wraz is putting the world to Rites, while we’re just living in his universe
Electric Hawk: Rites feels like a real statement of intent. What was the creative vision behind the album, and how long did it take to come together?
Wraz: This album has been in the works for years, with the first tracks getting composed & selected over two years ago. We kept adding more to it and at some point it really became clear that there was some storytelling going from the start to the end. Around that time I started reading the Dune books, and got heavily inspired by that dark, futuristic but also ancient world, with a complex lore that spans over 10,000 years and a very interesting take on technology and human evolution. It became clear that all of it influenced my music, and that’s how the Rites LP was born. I also made the whole thing a continuous listening experience to add to the concept. Highly recommend listening from start to finish!
The album blends filthy dubstep, trap, and industrial textures with cinematic interludes. How did you approach balancing those contrasting elements?
Like I said previously, since the composing of the LP happened over the span of 2 1/2 years, I went through a lot of phases myself. I’ve always been a multi-faceted musician, even though most people know me for my heavier tunes. I love going into the minimal & melodic sides of dubstep, creating an atmosphere for people to get lost in the dance, or experience different emotions other than hype. I think this album is a reflection of some of the different flavors of dubstep I like, united under a common theme. I also wanted to make an album that would follow the soundscape I’ve been building with DDD, which is the dark & mysterious, but also bass-heavy style I’ve put out on Akuma EP, Annunaki EP, or Desert Tales EP. I feel like all those releases fit together really well!
You collaborated with Truth and Hypho on the LP. What did those partnerships bring to the project, and how was it working alongside those producers?
Both of these artists have been my long time friends and are very talented in their own ways. It’s always a pleasure to create with them and the process was very fun and the workflow very fast and efficient. We bounced off each other’s ideas and ended up with two amazing tunes. Shout out Tristan, Dre, & Lou (Truth and Hypho) for contributing to this album; I love what we’ve done!
The album has a strong sense of cohesion despite each track having its own identity. Was that something you were conscious of from the start, or did it develop naturally?
It started subconsciously on the first few tracks, but over time I found some links in between each song and how to make them flow perfectly in the right order. Working on the continuous mix made me work on the details so that it would all work together even more, adding melodies and details to merge the intros & outros of each song into the next.
Rites is the first DDD vinyl drop of 2026. What does a physical release mean to you in an era where music is so predominantly digital?
I think holding a piece of real music in the physical world is SO important nowadays, and it gives you the opportunity to support an artist you love in a much more personal way than just listening on streaming platforms. There is something about owning the actual piece of art and having your own collection that feels so much more genuine and real, because every time you listen to it, it’s kind of a ritual in itself. You CHOOSE to take the time to enjoy the album, instead of having it play in the background like a lot of people do now when they consume music. In a world where AI is everywhere, it is a way to ensure that you’re supporting a real artist, which I think is so important!
Sounds surreal to say this, but SUPPORT HUMAN MUSIC!!!
The dubstep scene has evolved a lot in recent years. Where do you see it heading, and what role do you want to play in shaping that?
I’ve been doing this dubstep thing for 14 years now, so I’ve seen A LOT of people come & go, trends start & die, and the scene evolve into what it is today. I think there is a lot of amazing music being created by passionate artists right now , and that we’re at a point where my style of music is the most popular it’s ever been. Even the sample packs companies copy my style now! [haha] I really hope to continue growing as an artist in the next few years and bring my sound to bigger crowds, and connect with more people while doing it! I’m really happy with where my career is going, and very grateful for all the insane collaborations I’ve been making (shout out Ganja White Night, Caspa, Distinct Motive, & more…)
I am looking forward to the future and am more motivated than ever!
My goal is also to continue to inspire people and share my lifestyle to encourage everyone to take care of themselves. I hope my music can help my fans go through tough times, motivate them at the gym, or make them forget about their problems for a night, so they can just be in the moment, connected to the sound system. Let me be your Bass Therapist!
I see a lot of people talking about ”the state of the scene” in a negative way, and I think that in the end you attract what you put out in the world. If you really seek out good music, genuine people, and proper sound system culture, I guarantee you, YOU WILL FIND IT!Don’t let the algorithm fool you, and don’t be scared to dig into the underground.
You’ll find some absolute gems waiting to be uncovered! Also, don’t get mad at artists that are trying to promote themselves in this crazy era, even if the format isn’t what it used to be. Let the music do the talking!
Your work ethic and output have been a big part of your rise. How do you stay creatively driven?
I would say that music has always been my life, and has always been a form of therapy for me – I was making tunes even when no one was listening!
The act of composing is satisfying to me by itself, so that’s why I never stopped. When I was studying classical music at uni, I would make dubstep tunes to relax after doing my homework. Making it my full-time job just made sense after a while!
This year I am more driven than ever, because I feel like I gained a lot of momentum recently. It’s a blessing to be able to share my passion with so many people! Seeing all the love that people have for me is really heart-warming. I LOVE YOU ALL!
What does the rest of 2026 look like for you? Is there more music in the pipeline, and can fans expect to see you on the road?
The is A TON of music coming out this year!
