Phyphr released his new EP, Valley of Death, on January 30th. Hailing from the East Coast, Phyphr has been inspired to add his own twist to the classic sound in Denver, Colorado, where he now resides. He’s a songwriter and infuses his vocals into his tracks, creating another element to his mix of instruments and music production. Valley of Death is described as having themes of darkness, light, and rebirth. Serving as a guiding soundtrack while navigating the uncharted territories of our lives, this EP is just what we need to shake things up.
The Valley of Death opens…
The intro is smooth, like a fresh cup of coffee in the morning – it’s just what you need. Horns and vocals create a perfect harmony. “Don’t Bother Me” starts blending in our ears while the vocals carefully lead us into the beat. While the beat quickens, our attention sharpens. Horns consistently bop around in the background, and then, at the focus point, it’s perfectly balanced.
Leaning into the title of the EP, “Valley of Death,” is something you’d hear while driving to a valley… of death? Differing from Don’t Bother Me, this track is spooky and mysterious. It gets us wondering – where is this Valley of Death? Is it actually a real place? What does it mean? The mystery continues, and our curiosity intensifies.
“From All Evil” is deep, perfectly combining the moods of the two tracks above. We’ve found the middle ground – are we out of the Valley of Death? Or is it just beginning? Gracefully forced into the deep elements in this track, the deep vocals, shimmery beat… the contrast is beautiful. It rounds out this 3-track EP that kept us on our toes the whole time.
Are you grooving?
We sure are. There’s just something so special about instruments fused with electronic tracks. It creates a layer of something that cannot be replicated. If you enjoyed the Valley of Death, you’re in luck. Phyphr is currently on tour promoting this fresh EP from Florida to Colorado and back to the East Coast. Be sure to catch him, and these funky tracks live.
