Slowing things down into contemplation, Skiz has recently released his newest EP, The Five Movements. Focusing on the human connectivity of art, and playing culture-driven events such as Hulaween, Sound Haven, and Resonate, this northern Florida native knows how to conduct a crowd. With a genre focus of glitch-hop, trip-hop, and a more experimental side, Skiz homes in on an emotional auditory expression.

The first track is tantalizingly titled, “Split The Opal.” This tune is multifaceted, catching light just like its namesake. The first mere seconds of the song are instantly a treat. Distorted string notes languidly dance forth with chittering noises, driving the song forward. This song casts a wide atmosphere for the listener to paddle in. It is mesmerizing. Like wading through a crystal spring, the song is a downtempo dream. Additionally, towards the latter half of the song, the listener is transported along shimmering, glitchy percussions, bubbling up alongside the returning distorted strings. This is a song to get lost in the mire with.
Continuing the journey into this EP is “Q Symphony.” This song seamlessly flows into the listener’s ears, with lush sound design humming along. Contrarily, a slight meandering bite to this tune keeps the listener hooked and reeled in. Playful background plucks accompany a rhythmic beat in a peaceful groove. This track is the perfect pendulum swing of gritty groans and smooth sounds, like shellac on the eardrums.
Halfway There, Let’s Dive a Little Deeper
Wading into the deeper water is track three, “Scrammed.” This song harmoniously brings back a similar grit to the previous tune, while keeping its own pockets of airy notes. Gnarling bass notes zip throughout the song. Mysterious vocals wind the song into a quicker beat, picking up a bit of speed around the halfway point. Once again, Skiz perfectly pairs percussion with glitchy, meandering notes to round out the song.
Sailing away, the last song of the EP is “Controlled Escape.” Soft drum beats patter alongside a swelling energy in the beginning. Quickly, metallic sounds of clashing blades accompany a peaceful, head-nodding tune. It feels as though the listener has paddled their canoe into a retro arcade, laden with nostalgia. Subtle glitchy sounds and distant vocals fade out as this EP draws to a close. This song is the dream that slips through your fingers as you awake for a new day.

The Five Movements is an introspective body of work comprising four enchanting songs. Showcasing his emphasis on the human connectivity of art, Skiz has set the EP description to tell the listener that they are The Fifth Movement. Encouraging the listener to take a bigger part in the EP and integrate it makes this a very special auditory experience. Skiz slows us down a bit for this EP, creating blended atmospheres to swim in. We are very eager to see what he releases next!
