Evoke Emotion with CØNTRA and Saturna’s ‘What I Can Do’

Collaborative efforts can often spark innovative ideas as diverse perspectives blend to create fresh sounds and unique compositions. What I Can Do, the new two-song EP from CØNTRA and Saturna is a testament to that idea. Showcasing both artists’ unique styles while creating a cohesive auditory experience that feels fresh and inviting, it is an incredible addition to The Gradient Perspective’s catalog. I originally brought up the idea of making an EP with Dez (Saturna) after we heard that we’d be going on tour last year. Luckily, he was coming to Denver in October so we were able to squeeze in a sesh before the tour kicked off. When we first linked, things seemed to flow flawlessly; our styles and personalities overlap quite a bit. I really enjoyed working with the dude. I felt that he brought out a more emotional, slightly melancholic, and cinematic side in my creative decisions that I don’t seem to visit as often in my day-to-day work. We also both love working with vocal samples and organic instruments, so we seemed to incorporate that quite a bit 🙂

Merging Tangents

CØNTRA should be a well-known name to those familiar with the world of 140 bpm dubstep in the United States. His ability to meld ferocious sub basslines with sample-heavy productions has landed him huge releases on a number of lauded dubstep labels. His most recent release on Duploc showcases his ability to devastate dancefloors with his signature dubstep sound.

Saturna brings a diverse palette of world influences and organic textures. He’s made a name for himself with his emotive downtempo and freeform bass creations. With his most recent releases on Chmura’s label Qualia, he continues to stun with his lush soundscapes. 

So how do two artists on seemingly separate tangents craft something that not only honors their individual artistry but also explores new creative territories? What I Can Do features two standout tracks, “What I Can Do” and “Evoke.” Both shining examples of their innovative approaches to music-making, and their ability to create a harmonious sound together.

‘What I Can Do’ is the answer, not the question…

The titular, “What I Can Do,” takes listeners on a journey. Opening with ethereal melodic elements and vocal stabs, Saturna’s influence shines through. The track builds with pulsating bass and airy synths, creating an immersive atmosphere. As the sub bass swells into the drop, layered vocal samples add a haunting quality. As the track progresses, the synergy between CØNTRA’s deep bass and Saturna’s melodic touches becomes increasingly apparent. The track finishes with a flourish of innovative vocal-sample-based sound design. 

The second track “Evoke” begins with soothing synth pads that gradually layer in depth. Melodic elements and harmonies create a lush environment for the listener. As the beat drops, CØNTRA’s signature basslines emerge, grounding world-bass sounds with a rich, resonant foundation. The interplay between the organic elements and electronic textures showcases the duo’s mastery in sound design and sampling. Vocal fragments weave in and out, lending a sense of movement to the production.

This EP is stylistically adjacent to my previous releases and has more of a dancefloor focus.  There is always something to learn when working with a new artist, and the outcome always has a way of being different than either artist could have imagined on their own. I think this EP reflects both of our sounds well, while being totally unique!
