Take yourself on a journey—yes, you. If it feels safe at this moment, I encourage you to sit down and ask yourself this reflective question: What would that relationship look like if I personified music as a best friend? Close your eyes, and ponder…
Okay! Now that you’re back, I will give you some insights I acknowledged with my relationship with music that may be helpful for you to explore yours as well.
Is it the friend who helps you see the light at the end of the tunnel when all you see is darkness?
Is it the one who intuitively knows what you need at that moment without you having to say anything at all?
Is it the one who is always accessible with the click of a little play button and, boom, you’re transported into a whole other world?
Simply put, this friend has seen it all. They’ve accepted you, grown and evolved with you, and will continue to do so for the rest of your life if you choose such.
Think back to the songs that defined your happiest moments – the ones that played when you felt unstoppable when you fell in love – the ones that made you feel lighter and on top of the world.
Since it is in our nature to experience the full spectrum of emotions, there were times when everything felt heavy. The music sat with you then, too, in the heartbreak, in the grief, and the moments where you needed to feel something—anything—to remind yourself that you were still here and not alone in experiencing these emotions.
They say dogs are a man’s best friend? Shoot, I’d argue that music is right up there for me and I fucking love those fluffy, slobbery four-legged creatures.
But just like any other relationship, it’s important to take time to understand, evaluate, and appreciate your journey and current relationship with music.
We can collectively agree just how grateful we are for music in general!
So take a moment to reflect: What has your relationship with music looked like? How has it shaped you, held you, transformed you?
How can you cherish, honor, and pour love into that relationship moving forward?
The point here is to spark something inside you to bring more awareness to the relationship you already have with music. If it feels aligned, foster an even deeper relationship, viewing it as companionship rather than a myriad of sounds.
